Royal Navy International Air Day 2020

The official Royal Navy International Air Day is held annually at RNAS Yeovilton in Somerset, bringing together modern and historic military and civil acts in a day-long show.

The show retains its new moniker as the Royal Navy International Air Day as it continues to be the Royal Navy's only airshow event on the UK calendar, following the RNAS Culdrose Air Day's absence since 2017. The show is a truly 'naval' air event, attracting rare modern and historic aircraft from international military's and private operators from around the globe.

Roughly 40,000 people attended the event last year, with things to see and do both in the air and on the ground. Visitors can go on helicopter pleasure flights, browse stalls and look around the Fleet Air Arm Museum, located on the base. As is traditional for the Royal Navy International Air Day, the flying display culminates with a joint-force Royal Marine Commando-led assault demonstration, along with Fleet Air Arm and other UK force helicopters. The demonstration has become famed for its action-packed, pyrotechnic and flare-filled set up.

The 2019 show saw a variety of different aircraft take part in the day-long event, with the Spanish Navy McDonnell Douglas EAV-8B Matador II+ V/STOL fighter/ strike aircraft making a rare UK appearance in both the air and on the ground. Other military flying display acts included the Belgian Air Force's Lockheed Martin F-16AM Fighting Falcon display, piloted by "Vador" in the specially-painted "Dark Falcon" jet, and flypasts from a Royal Canadian Air Force Lockheed Martin CC-130J-30 'Super' Hercules and a jointly-operated (RAF/ Royal Navy) F-35B Lightning II. The show also featured the display debut of a Westland Wessex HU.5, which was recently restored to flight.

More rarities were on the ground at the show, with static appearances in the form of two Boeing C-17A Globemaster III's from the Qatar (Emiri) Air Force and US Air Force respectively, a Lithuanian Air Force Leonardo C-27J Spartan and maritime patrol aircraft from the Italian Navy in the form of an ATR P-72A and Piaggio P180M Avanti.
