Due to repairs, there will be no flights to or from Kuusamo Airport between July 17 and August 15, 2023, operator Finavia has announced.

The closure will see Finavia replace the runway lighting system at Kuusamo Airport and resurface the apron and taxiway.

“By developing the airport’s infrastructure, we can ensure safe and smooth traffic, which also supports the Christmas and winter travel that is important for tourism in Kuusamo. We are investing a significant amount, a total of €2.5m, in the renovation of Kuusamo Airport,” said Jonna Pietilä, Finavia’s VP Lapland airports.

Nearly €2m of the total investment will be used for replacing the runway lighting system. Finavia’s climate targets and energy efficiency have been taken into account in the improvements, the operator said. The existing runway lights will be replaced with energy-efficient LED technology.

The renovation will employ 10–15 people in the Kuusamo region, and several local businesses are involved. Finavia employees from Kuusamo, Oulu and Kajaani airports will take part in the project.

Kuusamo Airport is one of Finavia’s Lapland airports, and there is air traffic to the airport all year round, with passenger volumes increasing significantly in winter. Following the renovation, Kuusamo will be ready for the new winter season.

“One of our most significant marketing advantages is the low emissions of our airports. For tourists, this is a sign of a responsible travel destination and the work we do to promote sustainable development. Our next goal is to achieve net-zero carbon emissions at four airports in Lapland this year. Kuusamo Airport is one of these four airports,” Pietilä added.

During the break in flights, Rovaniemi, Kemi-Tornio and Oulu airports will serve the residents and tourists of the Kuusamo region.
