As part of the Accessible India Campaign, AAI Airports are now equipped with 20 Ambulifts to help passengers in wheelchairs or on stretchers.
The Ambulifts will be operated by airports with scheduled flight operations of Code C and other advanced level aircraft but which do not have aerobridge facilities. Each can cater for six wheelchairs and two stretchers at a time with an attendant, and they are fitted with heating, ventilation and air-conditioning.
Fourteen of the Ambulifts are currently operational, at Dehradun, Gorakhpur, Patna, Bagdogra, Darbhanga, Imphal, Vijayawada, Port Blair, Jodhpur, Belgaum, Silchar, Jharsuguda, Rajkot and Hubli airports. The remaining six are expected to be operational at Dimapur, Jorhat, Leh, Jamnagar, Bhuj and Kanpur by May 2022.
