Colorado Springs Airport (COS) has begun an expansion and remodel of its Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security queuing area.

Starting on May 15, the queueing area construction project is expected to take four months. The purpose of this remodel is to increase the footprint of the security queuing area by approximately 1,400sq ft, to around 3,100sq ft, the airport operator said.

Storefront and footprint renovation of the adjacent retail space, COS Provisions – operated by Hudson Retail – will take place at the same time. COS Provisions storefront will be closed while work is underway and a temporary kiosk will be set up and operational during the construction period.

“The need for this project is in direct correlation to the growth COS has seen over these past few years, and the growth we anticipate moving forward,” said Greg Phillips, director of aviation. “We know this renovation will not only make our checkpoint even easier to navigate, but it will also ensure traffic flow is properly accommodated.”

The estimated cost for this project is $1.2m and will be paid for with airport reserves. No taxpayer dollars will be used.

Nunn Construction and HB&A Architecture and Planning were selected for the project through the City of Colorado Springs public Request for Proposal (RFP) process.

The start of the project was marked by a wall breaking ceremony.
