Chile’s Santiago International Airport has unveiled the CoFood app, designed to tackle food waste.

Through the app, airport restaurants and retail outlets can provide information on products close to their expiration date, offering them at a reduced price. Travellers who have downloaded the app can access the information in real-time and buy the products at the new, lower prices. This means that food will be sold before it reaches its expiration date and will not end up as waste.

The trial will run until February 2021, with unsold stock collected by local charitable foundation Villa Padre Hurtado, which distributes food baskets to isolated elderly people.

Santiago has been part of the Vinci Airports network since 2015.
