Bombardier has completed a series of landings at London City (LCY) with its new CSeries, marking the end of trials aimed at certifying the aircraft for the unusual and challenging 5.5º approach to the airport.

The CS100, C-GWYD (c/n 50002), arrived at London Stansted from the manufacturer’s facility in Montreal on March 21, and while it was at LCY it was also used to validate ground-manoeuvring procedures and support equipment compatibility.  Upon completion of the work at LCY, which included the landings on March 22 and 23, C-GWYD flew direct to New York John F Kennedy Airport (JFK), demonstrating the aircraft’s capability to perform non-stop transatlantic services from London.

Rob Dewar, Vice President, C Series Aircraft Program, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft said: “The C Series aircraft program achieved another significant milestone with the completion of the demonstration tests at LCY.  It is the only commercial aircraft that was specifically designed for operations at LCY and we are extremely proud of its performance.  The aircraft smoothly performed all eight take-offs and landings during a two-day period, as planned.”

Declan Collier, CEO of London City Airport added: “It has been a pleasure to welcome the Bombardier CS100 aircraft and its team to London City Airport for the first time, as part of their testing and evaluation process.  Following the landmark C Series non-stop flight to JFK, we look forward to the completion of its regulatory certification, followed by entry into commercial passenger operation with Swiss.”

Transport Canada and European Aviation Safety Agency certification for CS100 steep approach operations is expected in the second quarter of 2017.  Clearing the way for the aircraft to use LCY will enable airlines to offer direct intercontinental flights to North America and the Middle East, as well as cities in Europe, Russia and Northern Africa, which were not viable with other aircraft.  Swiss is expected to be the first airline to fly the C Series into LCY later this year.  (Photo Bombardier)
