BEUMER Group, including Crisplant, has been awarded the project to link the baggage handling system in London Heathrow Airport’s new Terminal 2: The Queen’s Terminal, with the existing system in Terminal 1.

Working through main contractors MACE, BEUMER will design, install and commission the conveyor systems for the link, as well as integrating its application software and current electrical controls infrastructure.

The systems will be connected via the Heathrow T1 South Void Link, enabling Terminal 1 to process the departure and transfer baggage for passengers in Terminal 2.  This aims to streamline the baggage handling process to minimise transfer times for passengers on connecting flights.

Crisplant’s Managing Director Klaus Schäfer commented:  “Our proven ability to upgrade and integrate new baggage handling systems with minimal disruption will be a crucial factor in this project.  BEUMER Group will specify every detail of the baggage handling system integration to ensure that there will be no disruption for passengers, airlines or the normal operation of the airport.”

Terminal 2 is set to open in 2014 with an estimated capacity of 20 million passengers a year.
