Dubai International (DXB) welcomed 5,559,760 passengers in January 2013, setting a new monthly record for the UAE airport and representing a 14.6% increase from the 4,852,139 passengers handled in January last year.

Aircraft movements totalled 31,332, increased by 5.6% from 29,680.

It is believed that the boost in numbers was due to holiday traffic as well as visitors to the Dubai Shopping Festival.

Regionally, South America remained the fastest-expanding market at 23.7% growth, followed by the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) at 21.8%, Australasia at 21.3% and North America at 20.8%.  The Middle East was the only region to record fewer visitors with a decrease of 6.5%, which the airport blames on continuing political instability in Iran and Syria.

Freight volumes also rose 8.6% to 188,520 tonnes, up from 173,531 in January 2012.  DXB believes that this signals a return to, “robust growth in cargo volumes, supported by improved consumer confidence in the US and Europe”.

CEO Paul Griffiths commented:  “January’s record passenger numbers confirm that the growth trajectory recorded last year has continued into 2013 and [operator] Dubai Airports has taken another steady stride towards the 98 million passengers a year we expect to pass through our airport by the end of the decade.”
