Business aviation service provider Signature Flight Support has broken ground on a new fixed base operation (FBO) complex at London Luton Airport.

Luton is the busiest business and general aviation airport in the UK, and the third in Europe, handling approximately 12,000 flights annually.

The new complex will comprise a 16,921sq ft (1,572m2) passenger and FBO facility and 48,438sq ft (4,500m2) of hangar space, capable of housing two Boeing Business Jet- or Airbus Corporate Jet-sized aircraft.  A ground service equipment garage will also be constructed, as well as a covered car park and arrival area, private conference, waiting and catering facilities.

The new facility will be built to US Green Building Council’s LEED certification standards and will offer technologies for entertainment, communications, passenger and crew amenities and onward travel solutions.

The design plan also includes access to the aircraft ramp for VIP passengers via a secured gate for customer vehicles.  According to Signature, the overall design minimises transit time for passengers and crew.

President and Chief Operating Officer Maria Sastre commented:  “This new, contemporary facility is designed to accommodate the needs of our discerning customers.  Signature is keenly focussed on providing a world-class travel experience both in terms of our people and in our facilities.

“I would like to extend Signature’s gratitude to the Town of Luton and the Luton Borough Council for their support of this project which will bring significant benefits to the local business community and to those travelling through.”

Completion of the new hangar is expected in the third quarter of 2013 and the new FBO and passenger terminal is due to be completed by the end of 2014.
