The City of Philadelphia and US Airways have agreed on the terms of a two-year lease extension until June 30, 2015, for Philadelphia International Airport (PHL).

The agreement allows for $734 million in new capital investments at PHL, to create a better customer experience at US Airways’ largest international gateway.  These enhancements include a 1,500ft (457m) extension to runway 9L/27R, bringing it to 12,000ft (3,658m).  The Terminal B and C ticketing area will be redesigned, with the addition of an automated baggage handling and central screening system and a more spacious, centralised passenger screening checkpoint.

A multi-storey rental car facility will replace the current rental car parks.  An initial design for an automated people mover system is also planned.  Airside improvements including new taxiways, aircraft holding bays and an apron, as well as security upgrades, roof and window replacements, escalator upgrades, toilets, roadways, concessions programmes and flight information display systems have also been set out in the agreement.
